Better Hearing for Better Communication

Not all hearing care providers perform the same test to evaluate a patient’s hearing loss. In most cases, they will only perform a diagnostic audiological evaluation and stop there.

This routine procedure only tests a patient’s peripheral hearing loss, and central auditory loss is left untested. However, with the advent of modern audiology, it was determined that this test is insufficient to holistically treat hearing loss.

Peripheral hearing loss means your ears cannot hear specific wavelengths. In contrast, central auditory hearing loss means your ears fail to interpret what these sounds are.

People with central auditory hearing loss cannot discern similar-sounding words and experience communication difficulties. These patients have trouble understanding what was said to them or blocking out background noise.

Our comprehensive hearing exam aims to diagnose both peripheral and central hearing loss to devise the best hearing treatment plan. Here’s what you can expect from our comprehensive hearing exam:

Diagnostic Audiological Evaluation

We will perform the necessary hearing tests to assess your peripheral hearing function and identify potential problems. Our diagnostic audiological evaluation includes the following:

  • Otoscopy
  • Tympanometry
  • Otoacoustic Emissions Testing
  • Pure Tone Air Conduction Testing
  • Pure Tone Bone Conduction Testing
  • Speech Reception Threshold Testing
  • Suprathreshold Word Recognition Testing
  • PB Rollover Testing
  • Uncomfortable Loudness Level Testing

Once we determine your hearing loss type, degree, and configuration, we will develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Communication Needs Assessment

We include a communication needs assessment to test subjective hearing abilities and central auditory function. This includes:

  • Hearing Handicap Inventory
  • Word Recognition at Normal Conversational Levels
  • Extended High-Frequency Air Conduction Testing
  • Acceptable Noise Level Testing
  • Speech In Noise Testing
  • Listening Fatigue Screening

Our communication needs assessment will help us determine how your hearing loss affects your day-to-day life, identify any potential problems with communication, and how to best address those issues.

Plan of Care

After completing our diagnostic audiological evaluation and communication needs assessment, we will develop a plan of care tailored to your individual needs, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and communication strategies. We will also provide educational materials to help you better understand your hearing loss and how to manage it.

Efficient Diagnosis for a Seamless and Effective Treatment Plan

Diagnosis plays an important role in all aspects of healthcare. This critical phase will lay out how your treatment phase will go. When a doctor fails to accurately identify a patient’s hearing impairment, the treatment plan could be ineffective and a waste of money.

Our comprehensive hearing exam is the foundation of the treatment process. We use the information obtained from the tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis of a patient’s hearing impairment and holistically help them improve their hearing.
